Glendower House, Cardiff
The project is a 90 bed development which embrace modern student design and living. The development includes a feature suspended cinema and gaming pod within the elevated ground floor entrance and has a gymnasium, media function suite and communal room.
The construction consisted of a new 8 storey block within an existing carpark. The envelope construction is a mix of stone panels, metal cladding, terracotta tiles, brickwork and aluminium windows.
Internally the finishes reflect an innovative design with POD bathrooms and functional contemporary kitchens. New lifts are being installed with full M&E installations including up to the minute technology throughout to suit the modern student living.
This confined site had particular logistical challenges requiring meticulous planning and co-ordination.
Modern Methods of Construction:
From a Hot rolled Structural Steel Podium deck a Light-gauge steel frame system was used to form 6 storeys of structural frames fabricated using cold formed steel sections with a combination of load-bearing exterior and internal walls complete with metal deck concrete floors. Internally prefabricated bathroom POD’s were installed whilst the frame was constructed, saving valuable time on the programme.
